Humanities / Reading

Humanities is a REQUIRED CORE class for 6th, 7th & 8th grade students.

6th Grade
The primary focus of the 6th grade Humanities course at Cheyenne is to introduce students to the joy of reading and interpretation of fine literature. This is done through the study of the different genres of literature. Students will participate in a number of in-depth book studies during the year which are intended to develop higher level thinking skills and to increase vocabulary. Genres of literature to which students will be exposed include poetry, fiction/non-fiction stories, biographical and autobiographical stories, and personal narratives. Student will also study art and history as they pertain to literature and human expression. Independent reading and book reports will be assigned throughout the year.

7th Grade
The primary focus of the 7th grade Humanities course at Cheyenne is to continue to enhance knowledge and exposure to literature and vocabulary. Students will be expected to use higher level thinking skills to study and interpret various genres of literature, including biographical and autobiographical stories, essays, informative reports, and other chose pieces of literature. Vocabulary skills will be taught utilizing reading materials and other sources. Students will study art and history as they pertain to literature and human expression. Independent reading and book reports will be assigned throughout the year.

8th Grade
The primary focus of 8th grade Humanities is on higher levels of comprehension and vocabulary growth in preparation for higher education. Students will continue to be exposed to various genres of literature whose studies focus on development of higher level thinking skills. Vocabulary skills will be taught through reading selections and other sources. Students will learn how works of art, music, and literature are generated and influenced by human goals and ideas, such as structure and order, relationships and beauty, justice and the future. Independent reading and book reports will be assigned throughout the year.
