Math

6th Grade – General Math
Students will be expected to show Mastery in using fractions, decimals, and percents and use the information in problems instead of only calculating. Lessons will introduce Pre-Algebra, primarily Inverse Properties and Integers. Geometry topics will be reinforced and students will be expected to apply previous Geometry knowledge and formulas. The main emphasis change from 5th grade is that students will be expected to apply information instead of basic calculations. Expectations will include daily homework and weekly assessments. Introduction of some of the functions of calculators will be introduced but will not be needed on assignments.

6th Grade – Advanced Math (7th grade level)
Sixth grade advanced math will cover the 7th grade math curriculum, but classes will go deeper into topics and students will be expected to show, justify and analyze their solution pathways.

7th Grade – General Math
Students are introduced to the process of solving for an unknown variable with emphasis on showing correct procedures and work. Lessons strengthen their understanding of Pre-Algebra and integrate some fundamental Geometry. Expectations include daily homework and weekly assessments. Calculators are tools used to solve and support learning, but they are not allowed on most tests.

7th Grade – Advanced Math (8th grade Pre-Algebra)
This course will cover the 7th grade math curriculum but classes will go deeper into topics, and students will be expected to show, justify and analyze their solution pathways.

8th Grade – General Math
Students are introduced to the process of solving for an unknown variable with emphasis on showing correct procedures and work. Lessons strengthen their understanding of Pre-Algebra, Algebra and integrate some fundamental Geometry and introductory Trigonometry. Expectations include daily homework and weekly assessments. Calculators are tools used to solve and support learning, but they are not allowed on most tests.

8th Grade – Advanced (Algebra I)
High school credit course.

This class encompasses the skills of a high school Algebra course integrated with fundamental Geometry and introductory Trigonometry. This is a college prep course utilizing technology and is the foundation for all other branches of mathematics. Expectations include daily homework and weekly assessments.

8th Grade – Double Advanced Math (Geo/Trig Honors)
This course is taken at Desert Mountain High School and is a high school credit course.

This is a college preparatory course that includes Algebra and Trigonometry integrated into the curriculum to enrich the focus on Geometry. Specific topics will emphasize properties, relationships and measurement of geometric objects as well as requiring critical thinking, analysis, and communication.

*Students must pass an advanced placement exam to enter into the advanced Cheyenne program. Teacher recommendation is also required. Once on the advanced track, students must maintain a “B” average in order to stay placed in the program. NO EXCEPTIONS. In addition, students should never miss assignments or homework. Failure to comply with any of the above standards will result in removal from the advanced program.
